Mayfair celeb/trash-heaven Cipriani’s W1 looks set to have to re-brand – or close – following a trademark decision in the High Court, reports Reuters.

The judgment, in short, is that, even though it is their surname, father and son team Arrigo and Giuseppe Cipriani are breaking trademark law by using the brand name ‘Cipriani’. In Europe, that name belongs to the Orient-Express Hotels group, proprietors of the famous Venetian hotel of the same name.

Orient-Express Hotels have stated they will seek an injunction to enforce the judgement (which the Ciprianis have said they will appeal).

Whether the judgement has any repercussions for the Cipriani pasta brand, available in supermarkets, is not reported.
