“The best view from a restaurant in Berkshire and some of the very best food too from André Garrett” create huge “romantic” appeal for the dining room of this famous mansion and “though you take out another mortgage, the place has ‘between the sheets’ in its DNA”. But while some reporters find it “stuffy” others detect “a flicker on the naff-o-meter” (“disparate groups of people having dinner and spending the whole time on their mobile, or as we saw in the summer, slightly mismatched couples taking selfies on the terrace”).
“The glamour associated with Cliveden is in evidence in this atmospheric dining room”: a “grand and stately” chamber with chandeliers, plus “amazing views” over the “gorgeous, groomed grounds”, and – last but not least – fine cuisine from star chef, André Garrett. Reports are overwhelmingly positive, but in one or two there’s a slight whiff of opportunity missed: “very promising, but didn’t follow through”… “tried hard but a little lacking”. Still the overall verdict is often of “one of the most memorable dining experiences in the UK”.
“Risen from the dead!” – over the past couple of years, André Garrett has transmogrified the cuisine at this impossibly grand Thames-view palazzo, from what used to be perpetually mediocre, to something “exquisite” to match the most “beautiful setting” (with views onto the gardens from the window tables). And by the standards of such indulgent luxury, it’s “not beyond the realms of affordability” either. If there is a weak link nowadays, it’s sometimes-middling service.
“Such an improvement since we last dined here!”; if you’re looking for “fantasyland-perfect” grandeur, the dining room of this famous Thames-view palazzo is hard to beat, and – under the new chef, who used to work for the Galvin brothers’ empire – the food is beginning to measure up.
In November 2013, André Garrett joined Cliveden House to open a spectacular eponymous new dining room – André Garrett at
Cliveden. Having worked with Nico Ladenis, Guy Savoy and the Galvin brothers, André’s name is now above the door at one of the
most important country house hotels in Britain. The restaurant was ranked #19 in the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2017 with an
8/10 rating (and ‘Best Newcomer’ award in the 2015 guide), #20 in Square Meal Lifestyle’s UK Top 50 Restaurants 2016 and
#51 in “The Sunday Times Top 100 UK Restaurants 2015” in conjunction with Harden’s. In The AA Restaurant Guide 2017, it
retained three rosettes, and Cliveden House won “Hotel of the Year for England”. André also oversees the kitchen and menu at
The Astor Grill, the second restaurant at Cliveden House that is housed in the former stable block and opened in April 2016.
André Garrett was born in Bath and knew the life of a chef was for him from watching his grandmother manage a local restaurant.
Following training at the City of Bath College, he started his hospitality career at Hunstrete House Hotel near Bath (1989-91). He then
moved to London, where he worked at Simply Nico (1991), Chez Nico at 90 Park Lane (1992-94), Bistrot Bruno (1994-95), The
Dining Room at the Landmark Hotel (1998), Moxon’s Restaurant in Clapham (1999-2000), and Chris Galvin’s Orrery in Marylebone
(2000). In 2001 , André won the National Final – Prix Pierre Taittinger Competition, and soon after, won the 2002 Roux Scholarship
and took the opportunity to extend his skills at three Michelin-starred Guy Savoy in Paris. When Chris Galvin launched Galvin at Windows
at the London Hilton Park Lane in 2006, André was appointed as Head Chef (2006-13). The restaurant gained a Michelin star in 2010,
and André became renowned for his elegant modern French cuisine. André also represented the South West region on BBC2’s Great
British Menu 2011 , is on the board of the Academy of Culinary Arts for their annual awards of excellence and the MCA and is on the
judging panel for the Roux Scholarship 2017.
