“A fabulous little village gastropub” in “a gastronomic desert” near Penrith “with a chef who does everything on his own!” – Ben Queen-Fryer is “cooking his heart out” to deliver “really high quality pub food” from an “excellent-if-limited menu” that’s “amazing value for money” at this “small, out of-the-way inn on the edge of the Lake District”. “The venison suet pudding and triple cooked chips are to die for!”

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"An excellent meal deep in the countryside near Penrith, well out of the Lake District - a busy midweek night with friendly and efficient service and first rate cooking, such as the perfect cheese souffle starter, her Dover sole and my duck breast and confit leg, and the dark chocolate mille-feuille we shared. Well worth planning to return by breaking our next trip to Scotland on the nearby M6. Friendly smiles everywhere!"
