* Based on a three course dinner, half a bottle of wine, coffee, cover charge, service and VAT.

Still a “lovely, relaxing” location, with views across the Camel estuary, but feedback at this hotel dining room has become very mixed since the departure of chef James Nathan and his illustrious predecessor, Nathan Outlaw (and the ownership of the hotel itself changed in January 2019, which “may not have helped”). Whatever the cause, while it does still have some fans, some regulars feel it’s “just not in the same class” as it was formerly.

“Top-class”, “well-crafted seafood in a perfect location with views across the Camel estuary” remain the key features of this hotel venue which has seen two Nathans – first Nathan Outlaw, then MasterChef winner James Nathan – come and go in recent times (the latter departing in summer 2017 leaving Felix Craft at the stoves). Fans say he “maintains the same very high standard” of his predecessor, and the most critical review is still pretty measured: “the food’s gone from outstanding to good”.

MasterChef winner “James Nathan’s arrival on the banks of the River Camel (in early 2016) has heralded a new era for this hotel restaurant” – and some reporters “would always choose James” over “the more famous Nathan” (Outlaw) who used to cook here. Several constants in any case: “fabulous seafood and fish”, a “bustling” vibe and “outstanding” estuary views.
