Harden's survey result
For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
“Original and unique decor” has always helped distinguish these communal canteens (who share the same founder as Wagamama). Critics feel its cooking has “really gone downhill” over the years, but most reporters still say its “westernised Thai food” provides “a good formula for a quick, cheap meal”.
What Alan Yau did next after Wagamama: these handsome, communal Thai canteens remain an “easy” and “reliable” cheap ’n’ cheerful choice. On the food front, “compromises over the years have resulted in less authenticity”, but they are “approachably priced”.
“Just that bit more interesting than Wagamama” (same founder) – these highly popular, communal Thai canteens make a “dependable” option, even if their stylish interiors “have greater wow factor than the food”; “favourite dish? – the calamari”.
“Buzzy”, “friendly” and unusually “stylish” for a chain, these “darkly-lit” communal Thai canteens are a “reliable” standby for a “quick” meal; perhaps the cooking is somewhat “Asian-by-numbers”, but most reporters still find it “yummy” and “reasonably priced”.
