“Unique! Hard rock, offal, penises on the walls, skateboards… all plus rocking cooking from an ex-St John chef” – KISS fan, Lee Tiernan’s tiny kebab dive near Highbury Corner is “not a place for everyone”, but his massively spicy flatbreads “take this kind of dish to the next level”, and, for its adoring fanclub, “a brilliant vibe and superb food make it a must-go”.
“What can you say? Offal flatbread, blaring hard rock and lurid genitalia painted on the floor – but the food is great” at Lee Tiernan’s tiny heavy-metal kebab joint, still taking no prisoners in its third year at Highbury Corner. “Painful seating, but just incredible, confident, stunning cooking”. And for those who reckon “Queens of the Stone Age at full volume ruins everything” – Top Tip: “take away!”.
“If you don’t mind the noise” (“not everyone’s into heavy metal!”), Lee Tiernan’s head-banging Highbury Corner yearling is “certainly more than a few notches up from your average kebab house” and practically all reporters “love, love, LOVE” the “varied and meat-heavy” dishes (“lamb offal flatbread was one of the culinary highlights of the year!)”. “He’s gonna need a bigger restaurant…”
“Heavy metal kebabs!” – “The soundtrack is not for everyone” but “if you can handle the loud metal and strong spices”, you can enjoy some “mindblowingly good” and unexpectedly audacious cooking at KISS-fan and owner Lee Tiernan’s (ex-head chef of St John Bread & Wine) tiny, off-the-wall Highbury Corner newcomer. “Amazing” flatbread starters are followed up with extremely “different” kebab mains, many featuring offal.
Black Axe Mangal Restaurant Diner Reviews
"I had been put off by stories of ear shatteringly loud music, but had really wanted to go. On an early tuesday evening, we arrived at 6.45 with friends who had been a few times. But they now take bookings! Still a tiny table was found (there aren't any big ones). Ive rated the ambience at 4, for this is a decidedly quirky place with loudish music (actually OK, unusual choices, some of which I am a fan of). The place is a dump, but wonderful with it. In other words special. And the food! I loved it. Very creative - a smoked eel with borscht (plus vodka chaser) was tiny but incredibly intense - thee stand out. Lots of offal - Bone marrow lapsa was equally great. Ask for a beer - and it comes in a tin.. I'll definitely be back!"
