“The drive is always a treat (whatever the weather)” to this “sublime, tucked-away, romantic inn, set in the heart of the Forest of Bowland” (and one of the North West’s best-known escapes). The former fishing lodge on the Duchy of Lancaster’s estate “looks stunning, and there’s a warm and welcome atmosphere” (helped by its large wine cellar, from which you can also buy retail). In recent times, the feeling has grown that “there’s nothing wrong with the cooking, but that it’s not inspiring”, although some long-term fans insist you get the same “simple but outstanding fare” of yesteryear.
“Always well worth the journey” – this “archetypal, traditional English inn” is “a stunning and eccentric, former fishing lodge on the Duchy of Lancaster estate, complete with flagged floors, labradors and amazing views”. It’s become famous over the years: “weekends are a veritable sea of corduroy and brogues, as though you are part of a social event!” and when busy (always) service – though “sensationally welcoming” – can be “erratic”. Its food rating continues to slide year-on-year – “since appearing on ‘The Trip’ the place seems to have gotten a bit ahead of itself – the food is less special, and prices seem to be edging up”.
“A stunning location in the Forest of Bowland” underpins the huge appeal of this “wonderfully romantic” inn; it also draws plenty of plaudits for its “good consistent fresh food”, but service still has scope to “sharpen up its act”.
