“Interesting food of great quality and at a good price” from chef Zack Deakins is the attraction at this Grade II-listed townhouse on Angel Hill: one of the city’s better established culinary destinations. It “has seemed really busy and vibrant this year, which is great to see and really builds a good ambience”.

“Beautifully judged dishes appear from their small kitchen. How do they do it?” wonder fans of chef-patron Zack Deakins’s cooking in this “lovely old house” off Angel Hill. The “truly wonderful canapes” are a highlight, with the “generous” option of all eight for £11. Other reporters are more circumspect in their praise: “it’s a nice place to eat, but I wish they changed their menu more often – it starts to feel a bit samey” – or “there’s no doubting the intent and effort, but the tasting menu is a curate’s egg...”.

“The influence of a committed chef-patron is obvious” at this “fab old building” – a “lovely old house just off Angel Hill”, modernised with a “smart interior”: Zack Deakins’s “phenomenal” food is “ambitious yet well-executed” (“I was genuinely left speechless it was so good!”) and delivered by “a well-led front of house” who provide “slick, discreet service”. “Do try the canapes, but get your own set or you will fight over them!”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Our best dinner here yet, we had the tasting menu which at £72 with no cheeky 12.5% add on and this includes their canape selection of 10 which is usually £12 on its own. The service was good with time to stop a talk every single course was spot on with many small sauces and jellys which were not so small the flavours did not show. Highly recommended on all counts. "
