Harden's survey result
Summary
With its shades of past glory as a Tudor coaching inn, this famous Cotswolds institution (which accommodated both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell in different phases of the Civil War) has struggled in recent decades to revitalise its renown as a major destination. Sold by the Savoy Group a few years ago into the Cliveden and Chewton Glen stable, it attracts a reasonable number of mostly complimentary reports for its potentially “stunning” barrel-vaulted dining room. Its ‘bar and grill’ branding can seem incongruous, though, and efforts generally a bit “middle-of-the-road” amid all the potential grandeur.
Summary
It’s “always a delight to eat in the beautiful dining room” of this famous Cotswolds institution, a Tudor coaching inn where both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell stayed during the Civil War. Now in the same stable as Cliveden and Chewton Glen, its owners clearly plan to rebuild its place on the map as a luxury country hotel (after some years in the wilderness after it was sold out of the Savoy Group). Historically this barrel-vaulted chamber has attracted celeb chefs such as Gary Rhodes back in the day: now the style is ‘Bar & Grill’ – results seem “fine but nothing outstanding”.

Summary
“The glorious dining room has been magnificently redone recently” at this famous landmark on the edge of the Cotswolds (which dates back to the fourteenth century, and which went into decline after it was sold out of the Savoy Group some years ago). Now in the same group as Cliveden and Chewton Glen, it inspired too little feedback for a rating this year, but all positive (and Giles Coren in April 2018 went a bundle on the experience).
For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
