Converted into a luxe boutique hotel a decade ago, and taken over by Hythe Imperial owners the GSE Group in June 2018, this poshified village boozer “had some teething problems” – not least a divisive makeover – and is still sometimes accused of being “overpriced” or “lacking atmosphere”. Most reports, though, suggest “happily it’s on an even keel”: go by day for the “superb” lunch deal, or by night for “the serious stuff” (with prices to match).
This gentrified village boozer nowadays classifies itself as a ‘Luxury Hotel with a Fine Dining Restaurant’ and reviewers are split on the change. Critics say the “all-too-common revamp has ’bland-ified’ a previously characterful old pub…” (“I hear millions were spent on this historic building but, that doesn’t buy you a quality restaurant”). On a more positive note, fans hail “beautifully crafted” dishes “conjuring distinctive flavours” in “comfortable surroundings”.
“Very handy for the port and Channel Tunnel”, a “quaint” pub-with-rooms (or boutique hotel, depending on your terminology) whose dining room provides an “interesting” and “reasonably priced menu”.
“Keeps me coming back time and time again” – a “smart former pub in a delightful valley” offering “very good food, much of it locally sourced” and “served with great attention to detail”.
