Sugar Boat drops anchor in Helensburgh

If you have been wondering what Arbutus co-founder Will Smith has been up to since the Soho restaurant closed last year, wonder no longer. The restaurateur has just opened a new venture, Sugar Boat – a bistro, bar and wine shop – in Helensburgh, Scotland.

Situated on the town’s Colquhoun Square, the restaurant offers outdoor seating and a courtyard terrace for al-fresco dining and drinking. Open all-day, Sugar Boat serves everything from morning coffee and brunch, to afternoon cream tea and bistro fare.

On the menu: hand-cut pappardelle with rabbit and mustard; sea trout, apple and fennel salad with pickled cucumber; and Scottish lamb hotpot with buttered kale and young vegetables.

Head chef, Scott Smith, formerly of Wild Honey, Arbutus and Odette’s, and Will Smith have created a seasonal menu with an emphasis on local produce – which should be abundant given the restaurant’s seaside location, a stone’s throw from the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

The bar serves craft beer from Glasgow’s West Brewery and Stirling’s Fallen Brewing Company, as well as over 25 Scottish gins. Wines are of course available from the bar, but you’ll also find over 100 old and new world vintages at the attached wine shop.

Smith parted ways with his business partner Anthony Demetre last year and sold his stake in Arbutus. Demetre is planning to reopen the restaurant in London and is currently looking for a site.
