Authentic Cantonese/dim sum chain Duddell’s (with 10 sites across Hong Kong) opened its first UK branch, in St Thomas Church in London Bridge, this week. It is the first time the celebrated restaurant has opened outside of HK, where the original was founded in 2013.
Set in the historic St Thomas Church, Duddell’s London showcases authentic Cantonese dishes and hand-crafted dim sum. However it offers a more relaxed take on Cantonese cuisine than its HK Michelin-starred counterpart, but still features Duddell’s signature dim sum symphony – which is more delicate and intricate than traditional dim sum.
Heading up the kitchen at Duddell’s in London is chef Daren Liew, previously exec sous chef with the Hakkasan Group, with over 20 years of experience in Cantonese cuisine. The menu shares a new take on traditional dishes, such as: Ying Yang Prawn with Citrus Dressing; Smoked Black Angus Ribs with Red Wine Soy and Baby Peach; and Truffle Chargrilled Black Cod with Chinese-Aged Vinegar, Lily Bulb and Nameko Mushroom.
Signature Duddell’s HK dishes also appear on the London menu including: Guandong Crispy Salted Chicken; 12 Hours XO Beef Shin with Sea Vegetables; and Barbequed Iberico Pork with Honey Glazed Soy Bean.

Duddell’s London also features a bar with a list of old and new world wines as well as classic and innovative craft cocktails with an oriental twist. A mezzanine level offers a semi private dining space overlooking the restaurant.
Designed by Michaelis Boyd (Soho Farmhouse, Soho House Berlin), the restoration aims to maximise the daylight and heritage elements of the Grade II-listed building which remains one of the most distinguished examples of Queen Anne architecture in London. The existing alter on the ground floor remains, while a contemporary twist is added with the green tiled, open dim sum kitchen and bar, terrazzo worktop and brass shelves to recreate the retro feel of a 1960s Hong Kong ‘tea restaurant’.
As with its Hong Kong counterpart, Duddell’s London has a strong focus on its art programme and is set to become a destination for both foodies and art lovers alike.
