Borough Market’s Vinopolis to close on 21 December

vinopolisIt may never have lived up to its cathedral-like setting under the railway arches but Vinopolis has been a Borough Market institution since 1999, so news of its impending closure is certainly sad. The wine tour and tasting venue, along with its restaurant Cantina Vinopolis (where food was always rather secondary to wine buffery), will be gone by 21 December to make way for a new shopping centre.

Our reporters often felt that the cafe/restaurant was “trading on its location” but always praised its “great selection of wines by the glass” and some even enjoyed a “surprisingly good” meal there, with pre-theatre and Sunday lunch recommended as highlights.

Vinopolis managing director Samantha Anderson said the site would be converted into retail premises. (Just what we all need…)

Events at the 2.5 acre site will continue as normal until 21 December 2015. If you haven’t had the opportunity to sample wines at this Borough Market landmark before, now is your last chance.
