Looking for a lardy cake in Clerkenwell? Ask For Janice

A former Mark Hix protégé heads up this Clerkenwell newcomer, and it shows. Modern art prints, murals and neon signage from the likes of Damien Hirst, Chris Bracy and Kid Acne adorn the walls of Ask For Janice, an all-day dining affair in Long Lane.

Upstairs is the coffee bar and restaurant, while downstairs is the basement bar serving up 45 London gins, 50 craft beers and 20 wines by the glass. Head chef, Nik Prescot’s (formerly of Hix) menu includes the likes of pork chop, potato terrine, nettles, beans and gravy or nettle dumplings, butternut squash, pecorino and nuts and English asparagus, smoked yolk, onion three ways and aioli. Or dishes no less elaborate-sounding are available in small plate format.

For breakfast there’s buttermilk pancakes and homemade crumpets, and a selection of sandwiches and sweet treats including iced pink finger buns and lardy cakes are available at the coffee bar.
