Featured Cartmel Restaurants
1. L’Enclume British, Modern restaurant in Cartmel Cavendish St - LA11
Worth driving the length of the country for lunch! Simon Rogans beautiful old building in a stunningly romantic Lake District village is superb all round, and its not hard to understand why its such a powerful attraction (the surveys third most commented-on restaurant outside of London). Every course is a conversation starter, and the cooking delivers pure theatre; the most indulgent, understanding, fun, exciting, tasty gastronomic journey ever 17 courses so perfectly balanced, and so packed with flavour that it left me fully satisfied yet begging for more! The year has not been without its challenges ex-head chef Mark Birchalls departure is noted by the odd regular (who feels the menu is more stagnant as a result), but Sam Wards promotion from his post as maître d has done little to dent the impeccable, almost choreographed service, and for most guests this is an astonishing, clever, occasionally challenging, and brilliant experience.
2. Rogan & Co British, Traditional restaurant in Cartmel Devonshire Square - LA11
Rogan at accessible prices is the aim of this small and intimate brasserie, near the mothership. The feeling lingers that it used to be great, but has got a few things to work on to hit its original level (and is underwhelming if you compare it to LEnclume). That said, for the same price as an ordinary meal in a Lakeland pub you get interesting and delicious food.
3. Pig & Whistle British, Modern restaurant in Cartmel Aynesome Rd - LA11
2016 Review: A revamped gastroboozer that was, until recently, part of Simon Rogan's empire. The chef (of nearby L'Enclume fame) surrendered the lease in February 2015 and new owners took possession in August, too late for our survey.
6. Aulis at L'Enclume British, Modern restaurant in Cartmel Cavendish St - LA11
Billing itself as a "unique and interactive dining experience going ‘behind the scenes’ of L’Enclume’s kitchen", Aulis has just six seats, is open only on Friday evening and Saturdays, and has one menu, at £150. A veritable 'bucket list' chef's table experience.
