There’s a recession on, right? Something of a surprise, then, at 9.30pm last night to enter the new Osteria dell’Angolo in Westminster – opposite the new Home Office – and find it not only full, but with besuited would-be guests queuing for a table.
What makes it so unaccountable is that the upmarket Italian has opened with a veritable batsqueak of launch publicity.
Owner Claudio Pulze, whose 52nd London restaurant this is (we think), was on the door, and he is as bemused as we were by the instant, unsought popularity. Obviously, it just goes to show. But what it goes to show is not yet clear.
(We thought it might have something to do with having a guardian angolo, so were rather disappointed to discover that the word actually means ‘corner’.)
