Aldo Zilli is set to relaunch his Dean Street site as a vegetarian restaurant called Soho Green on 14 February.
Veggie restaurants in London are nothing new, of course, but we believe this is the first time a known mainstream chef – and TV personality – has launched a veggie restaurant, and in the heart of town too. (The only approximate parallel we can think of is Alain Passard, who made the celebrated Arpège, in Paris, an essentially non-meat restaurant back in 2001.)
Could this a sign of Something Big? Perhaps greater emphasis on eating greens is an idea whose time has come. Eating less meat is, after all, by far the most significant environmental contribution we could all easily make (and probably good for the heart too), and Times critic Giles Coren (not a veggie) has recently started banging the veggie drum. And Sir Paul McCartney, no less, has promised to visit on the opening day (Evening Standard).
Can’t wait to see Zilli’s menu? It’s already available online.
