Albert Roux, 74, goes Stateside

At the age of just 74, London’s first great chef of the modern era – who co-founded Le Gavroche back in 1967 – has put his name to his first US venture. Chez Roux opened not in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, but in a seemingly bizarre location near Houston, Texas back in March, we discover from the NY Daily News. (That city, in case you didn’t know, is apparently the fourth-largest in the US.)

The restaurant is within La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa, in which a gentleman called Ronnie Ben-Zur has invested $130 million. It seems that Ben-Zur is a long-time friend of the famous toque, explaining a business development that’s otherwise rather hard to fathom. Roux's restaurant is one of nine in the 200 acre resort, which includes golf cottages and lakeside villas, and has Roux's protégé Matthew Gray (ex-Inverlochy Castle) as Executive Chef.

A second Chez Roux opened in Rocpool Reserve Hotel in Scotland in April.
