The Botanist – the latest venture from the ‘Gun E14’ brothers – Tom and Ed Martin – is to be launched in Sloane Square in the spring.
Sloane (Sir Hans) was an eminent naturalist, and – with a nice sense of timing – the intended late-April/early-May opening should see the place nicely bedded down in time for the Chelsea Flower Show.
It is perhaps a sign that we live in times of gastronomic flux that the advance information available at no point uses any term such as ‘restaurant’, ‘brasserie’, ‘bistro’, ‘café’ or ‘gastropub’. With all-day-every-day opening promised, however, and decorative features including a “glittering chandelier”, the place does rather sound as if it will be more like a brasserie than anything else.
On this basis, the one-time Sloane Square desert will then have no fewer than three brasseries all in a row: the recently-relaunched Chelsea Brasserie SW1, the newcomer, and Oriel SW1 (plus the Royal Court Bar SW1, below).
