Back in 2005, Gary Rhodes launched Rhodes W1 at Marble Arch’s Cumberland Hotel. It was supposedly shortly to be followed by an adjoining fine dining restaurant. Well, here we are – just eighteen months on – and the launch is apparently now imminent. (The delay has never been fully explained, but it seems to have something to do with getting the design right.)
Rhodes is a talented chef, but his spin-offs – not least Rhodes W1 – have not always been a particular credit to him. Let’s hope that the team here – led by Brian Hughson, formerly chef at 30 St Mary Axe (aka the Gherkin) – can get it right.
Appropriately, for one of the most determinedly British of chefs, the launch is scheduled for St George’s Day, 23 April.
