Followers of Aiden Byrne – who made a bit of a name in some quarters when he was chef at the Dorchester Grill – may wish to know that he is to take over one of the more prominent restaurant sites in his native North West England.
In addition to his existing gastropub The Church Green, in Lyme, he is to relaunch The White House, in the famous footballers’ village of Prestbury, reports bighospitality.co.uk.
Byrne is apparently aiming for a Michelin star at the White House (claiming that he was prevented from getting one in Park Lane by the Dorchester’s ‘red tape’), and is spending £0.5m on upgrading the premises, in preparation for a November launch.
Let’s hope this hardly inconsiderable sum of money is being wisely spent. The ethos of the North West is very much against ‘poncy’ dining, and even Byrne’s gastropub cuisine has been criticised in some quarters for being fussy and over-wrought.
One can only dread the heights of flummery to which – cheered on by the WAGs of west-Cheshire – he may now be aspiring.
