Covent Garden re-born

Covent Garden has not had much as a reputation as a dining destination in recent years. It was not always so, however. From 1926 to 1994, for example, Boulestin – a great Art Deco restaurant, which was the home of the world’s first ‘TV chef’ – occupied the site which is now the Pizza Hut. Forthcoming openings, however, suggest the area’s time may come again.

The Forge – the third project from the people best known for Le Café du Jardin WC2 – opens on 15 March at 14 Garrick Street (tel 7379 1432). Trading as L’Estaminet, these wonderful premises – originally a stained glass factory – have in recent years been totally under-exploited.

The really big news, however, will be the opening of an offshoot of London’s most popular gastropub, the Anchor & Hope SE1, next month. But this time, they’ll be taking bookings!

And, opening in August, Thomasina Miers (ex-Petersham Nurseries TW10) is to be involved in major Mexican venture, called Wahaca, in Chandos Place.
