D&D London – the group formerly known as Conran Restaurants – is to open its first English restaurants outside London. But they’re taking some of the capital’s traditions with them. Birmingham, the lucky city, has long been waiting for such an opening, but now D&D is promising that three will come along at once!
D&D told caterersearch.com that the three newcomers, to open in 2010, will all be sited at the top of a new city centre development called the Cube. The group also plans expansion abroad.
Coincidentally, today also sees D&D giving the London Evening Standard an upbeat trading report. Des Gunewardera, chairman and chief executive, said:
“Without doubt since February we have seen a modest improvement. It may be something temporary but it's a fillip. We are ahead of our expectations and only slightly down on where we were last year.”
Such statements do help explain why the rash of closings many – including the aforesaid Mr Gunewardera and ourselves – expected in the first half of 2009 have not materialised.
