Pret and tuna – the real story

Much confusion in the media of late about sandwich chain Pret, and its position on tuna. So, from the horse’s mouth, here’s the real position....

The decision – made by boss Julian Metcalfe, and prompted by the fishing-shockumentary The End of the Line – is not, as previously widely reported, to stop selling tuna at all, but to stop selling Yellowfin, which Pret uses in its sushi. This is similar to, if not as prized as Bluefin, which is known to be critically endangered and therefore avoided by most responsible restaurateurs in this country (but not, it appears, by Nobu, or by anyone in Japan).

Pret will still sell skipjack tuna in baguettes, but these will contain only fish caught by pole and line methods, rather than indiscriminately in nets. (This change will take a few months to introduce.)

Odd, isn’t it, that it’s falling to private enterprise to push for sustainability. Isn’t that what governments are for?
