Famous City veggie sees light!

Starting with a half-price preview tonight*, celebrated City vegetarian, the Place Below EC2, becomes, er, non-vegetarian. For the first time in its twenty year history it will be serving meat and fish alongside its veggie staples. The restaurant, beneath St Mary-le-Bow will now open all day (and evening) too.

Owner Bill Sewell has taken the decision to introduce meat to the menu following his own personal recent renunciation of vegetarianism.

Would be vegetarians often say the bacon would be the hardest thing to give up, and it transpires that it was indeed bacon from pigs from a farm run by a friend of Sewell that ‘turned’ him.

His conversion is now reflected in a menu smattered with produce from the Herefordshire farm concerned. The new daily-changing menu, however, remains veggie-friendly.

The new Café Below will also be offering a "short but tasty" wine list, as well as a dedicated takeaway counter. A breakfast menu will be available too.

The Place Below a potential venue for power breakfasts for red-brace City types! Are there no certainties in the world any more?
