Tom Aikens protégé Aiden Byrne is moving on from the Dorchester Grill W1 at the end of January. Caterersearch.com reports that the Liverpool-born chef will open his own establishment, the Church Green Pub in Lymm, Cheshire.
Byrne’s departure gives The Dorchester yet another chance to establish a dining destination of real note. Some hope. In recent years, this internationally-famous five star hotel has made a consistently dismal restaurant ‘offer’. Its two ‘tenant’ restaurants – China Tang W1 and Alain Ducasse W1 – are both remarkably lacklustre, and the Grill, since its much-derided relaunch three years ago, has seen off two chefs of note. (The first was Ollie Couillard, now at Bord’Eaux W1.)
Why the Dorchester can’t get its restaurant act together, we don’t really understand: when we last did the sums, the international hotel group to which it gives its name was more Michelin-garlanded than any other hotel group in the world.
