To no one’s surprise, 60% of London’s restaurants saw a year-on-year decline of business in January (with 20% down more than a quarter). That’s the conclusion of a survey by Business Link (reported on caterersearch.co.uk).
Even these figures, of course, were achieved only after the ferocious 'January sales' – in the form of newspaper and other promotions – in the restaurant world.
This confirmation of the obvious sagging in trade begs an even more obvious question: where are all the restaurant closures? Many commentators (including us) thought it very likely that the first quarter of 2009 would see quite a cull.
