The Folly, a brand new botanically-inspired bar has opened in the City. An 8 meter high Norwegian Spruce 'grows' from the basement to the main bar in the floor above, whilst plant-pot lampshades and a bee-hive style back-bar create a venue that brings the outdoors indoors.
Heavy-set wooden bench tables contrast with contemporary bar stools to create an open plan feel where guests can watch the theatre of the kitchen. For a more private setting, the kitchen-style chef's table is available for up to 14 guests and there is even a library snug to the rear of the first floor where books can be read, borrowed and replaced at leisure.
Downstairs, three raised private vaults decorated with botanical 'graffiti' each have space for 12 people, whilst leather booths are also available for cocktail sharing. The deli or 'potting shed' offers freshly made bread, sandwiches and cured meats as well as specialities from Borough Market including oils from Danilo Manco of The Olive Oil Mill and mustards and pickles from Allens of Mayfair. It also offers freshly cut flowers and a pop-up element providing anything from a hair and make up boutique to a cup-cake cafe!
Calorie counted cocktails will cater for those who fancy a trim tipple, or those with a sweet tooth can indulge in a Folly liquid desert such as the chocolate chilli martini. An extensive wine list with over 40 wines available by the glass cater for the indecisive, without having to commit to a whole bottle.
The modern European menu is geared towards local and seasonal produce. Choose from a range of light bites, sharing boards, gourmet sandwiches and burgers as well as mains and salads.
Open from breakfast until midnight, The Folly's botanical links are more than cosmetic. Drake & Morgan who also own the refinery in Bankside, the parlour in Canary Wharf and The Anthologist in the City, have marked the opening by supporting ProAves, a conservation charity, by funding the purchase of an area of Columbian rainforest.
The purchase will protect the forest from deforestation, save animals from extinction and will effectively offset The Folly’s carbon output. The Folly is also donating 50p for every purchase of its chargrilled vegetable sandwich to Hauser Bears, a charity that seeks to protect bears worldwide, including species native to Colombia.
