. Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons
French restaurant in Great Milton
Church Road - OX44
One of the most beautiful places in the UK; Raymond Blanc has created a jewel-like experience (especially for couples who stay over in one of its rooms), at this immaculately kept Elizabethan manor, in a small village south of Oxford an iconic destination (and the surveys most mentioned outside London). From the moment you step out of the car, the staffs welcome instantly makes you feel at ease, and a visit to the gardens including the large kitchen garden that partly supplies the dining room is an essential part of the trip; even in the icy cold of February they are a pleasure to wander around, and make one truly believe that fairy tales are indeed true! For some reporters the atmosphere in the dining conservatory itself is exceeded by other elements of the experience, but quibbles in this respect are few. Meanwhile, if theres a gripe about the beautiful and typically French haute cuisine, its that some find it slightly lacking innovation but for the vast majority of guests its finesse and awe-inspiring attention to detail contribute to an overall occasion thats a benchmark for all things good in hospitality. Naturally its best not to dwell on the prices, but the overwhelming verdict is that its worth it!
. The Sportsman
Fish & seafood restaurant in Seasalter
Faversham Road - CT5
From the outside you would think you had arrived at a run down pub, but Stephen Harriss legendary, if shabby looking coastal tavern on the North Kent marshes near Whitstable is nigh on the perfect pub. Few establishments can match its consistency they get it spot on, every time, all of the time be it the chilled-out atmosphere; the utterly charming service; or his inspired, honest, strongly-flavoured cooking most particularly out-of-this-world fish dishes. Go just go! Top Menu Tips magnificent native oysters and his pitch-perfect slip sole with seaweed butter: the most delicious fish dish ever
and he makes his own butter!
. Wheelers Oyster Bar
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
8 High Street - CT5
Like eating in Grannys parlour
if Granny cooked fish to perfection; the towns oldest restaurant (est. 1856) is one of the funkiest places you can eat in a tiny room with only 1416 seats serving an interesting menu of excellent seafood, and BYO helps make it a very good-value experience. Lets hope they dont wreck it with a mid-2016 refurbishment, bringing a cocktail bar and allegedly even toilets on site.
