Set in 27 acres, this country house hotel is one of the better-known luxury destinations in the Lakes and boasts a dining room whose floor-to-ceiling windows provide magnificent views of Windermere and the surrounding peaks, where chef Robby Jenks presides over the kitchen. It inspired very upbeat (but relatively little) feedback again this year, with nominations as an ideal romantic choice or for its impressive afternoon teas. For a full meal in the dining room, lunch is a four-course affair for £60 per person, and in the evening the sole option is a seven-course tasting menu at £115 per person.

“Quite possibly the most beautiful view from any dining room in the UK” – through “floor-to-ceiling windows giving onto Windermere and the hills beyond” – sets the tone at this “traditionally luxurious” country house hotel, of some note. “Fortunately chef Robby Jenks’s food is well up to the standard of the views”“there really isn’t the slightest bum note”, and service is “note-perfect” too.

“Magnificent views over Lake Windermere” are part of the appeal of this celebrated county hotel, which gained a fancy new glass-walled restaurant, wine cellar and chef’s table a few years back. It attracted the odd middling rating last year, but most feedback has remained very upbeat as chef Robby Jenks (from Newbury’s Vineyard at Stockcross) succeeded Peter Howarth in spring 2019, and we’ve maintained its ratings as an “amazing” all-rounder.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
