Sam & Alex Berry are cooking up excitement in the ‘burbs at their “lovely local” – a rather posh venture whose “food is way above its prices” and accompanied by “friendly service” to boot. If you want more of the Berry magic, they also run gin bar/school/micro-distillery Bone Idyll, pizzeria Cento Uno in Surbiton, and Teddington restaurant One One Four.

Sam & Alex Berry’s “small neighbourhood restaurant” is a real winner. It’s a chic and vibey place that’s “always a really special experience – I can’t believe this is a suburban restaurant!” – and the “consistent” and imaginative cooking comes at “reasonable prices”. The Berrys also run the Bone Idyll micro-distillery, pizzeria Cento Uno in Surbiton and One One Four restaurant in Teddington.

Sam & Alex Berry “have found what they do well and stuck to doing it well” at this suburban venture managing to “capture a Central London vibe”; “the food is exciting, ever-changing” and “exceptional for the price” – and, given that they run their own gin label/micro-distillery, The Good Life, they do “just the best cocktails” too. Teddington spin-off One One Four, and pizzeria Cento Uno, in Surbiton, are also part of the Berry empire.

“Top-quality food at an affordable price” is the recipe at Sam & Alex Berry’s four-year-old, which makes a virtue of its suburban setting to be ‘part city slicker, part country bumpkin’. So it’s “well-executed and professional” but with a “relaxed and welcoming ambience”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
