You can hang with the local mansion-owners and beachgoers at this Poole Harbour outpost of the Stein empire, which has a brilliant location overlooking the water. It inspired less feedback this year than its stablemates, hence we’ve left it unrated.

An “absolutely fantastic location by Poole Harbour” and “a large selection of fish dishes” keep the tills ringing at the TV chef’s Dorset outpost. “The food is standard Stein fare” – which pleases most reporters (“gorgeous seafood”), if not quite all – and “prices are really going up”. Top Tip – “get a table upstairs for lunch in the summer”.

A “stunning position in Sandbanks directly overlooking Poole Harbour” remains the top draw to this “tucked away (but very popular) location” by the TV chef. Reports have been a bit up and down in the past, and continue to range from “excellent” (the seafood) to “standard”, though most agree it “still performs a useful function”.

A “stunning location” by Poole Harbour (“if you can bag a table by the window upstairs, the view over the bay is superb”) is an undisputed plus of this four-year-old outpost of the Stein empire. but the consensus over its other attractions became weaker this year. Most reporters feel that “the food is a match for the setting” and say “this is one of the better, non-Cornwall Ricks”. The size of the bill, though, is a sore point for a fair few dissenters who feel it’s becoming “overpriced, chainified and no longer of particularly good quality”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
