Stop Press – as of January 2023, much-garlanded chef Robert Thompson is “back to his own establishment after a brief venture to Cowes’ North House” (now rebranded as Foresters Hall), a fancy boutique hotel that was reportedly not fancy enough to make a good match for his high-end cooking. Fans couldn’t be more delighted that his “amazing” venue is back in business, and “while the food is centre stage”, the “service and theatre of it all are a great support act” (particularly if you sit downstairs – home to the open kitchen).

“A true island favourite” from Robert Thompson – perhaps its most renowned chef: this “romantic” five-year-old occupies a “quirky” listed building, where “tables opposite the open kitchen are in high demand, while upstairs is more intimate”. It wins raves for “outstanding” food “inventively using the best local/seasonal ingredients” and “there is every chance that one or more of the courses during your meal will be served by a chef”. “The personal cutlery drawers are an interesting touch” allowing your own choice of the best utensils at any juncture!

"On this visit we ordered the tasting menu and every dish presented to us was superbly presented and put together. It's a lovely touch to be able to choose your own cutlery for each dish from the small drawer in your table. Shame the service didn't feel as special as the quality of the food deserved."
