“Cavernous” Belgian moules-frites halls complete with waiters dressed as monks; critics say they’ve “lost their novelty”, but the opening of the first new branch in years – in Soho – shows there’s plenty of life in the old dog yet? “Especially for groups”, these “big”, “down-to-earth” and “buzzy” moules and Belgian beer emporia make “good-value” standbys.
The appeal may have “diluted” over the years, but these “monastic” Belgian brasseries – majoring in moules-frites and Continental lagers – are still “lively” (“noisy”) and “reasonably priced”, and notably good with kids too.
Belgo Holborn seats 130 diners, it has a beer hall themed restaurant to the right and a drinks area to the left with a large bar in the middle. Holborn has big glass windows looking out onto Kingsway and outside seating. It’s a great blank canvas still with the Belgo trademarks.
