“The wine list is pricey, even by Marylebone High Street standards” at this Tudorbethan pub, with leaded windows and inset stained glass. That’s to be expected, as it’s backed by Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos – part of the family who own the legendary Château Margaux – and you really have to be a lover of wine (some famous names are available by the glass using the Coravin system) to get the most out of the place, which has extensive listings – amongst other areas – of bottlings from Bordeaux and Burgundy: for example, there is a ‘Château Margaux Experience’: a ‘degustation’ of 50ml glass of 4 vintages for £95. Viewed purely as a place to get fed? “We liked it, the food is lovely, but there are options offering better value”.

Converted from a Tudorbethan pub in Marylebone (complete with black and white exterior and leaded-glass windows), this three-floor wine bar and restaurant is part-owned by a scion of the French dynasty behind Château Margaux, explaining the extensive list of vintages from the estate on the French-centric list, many available by the glass. The better-than-incidental French/Italian cooking is also well-rated.

“A fabulous wine list” is the highlight one would hope for at this Marylebone venture – a pub converted by part of the family which owns Château Margaux. Fifty wines are served by the glass and there’s an extensive list of directly sourced Château Margaux wines. Feedback says the food – a mixture of French and Mediterranean dishes – is “wonderful”, too.

These “refitted pub premises” are in their second year as a Marylebone wine bar, brought to us by a part of the family which owns world-famous claret, Château Margaux. Winning solid ratings for its “smart small-plates of French bistro cooking” and “great service” – it’s “all very nice, but too expensive” to attract much feedback… unless you’re tempted by a glass of 1999 vintage Margaux for £160.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

Clarette is a chic and stylish restaurant & wine bar split across three floors, offering a fine wining & dining experience in the heart of Marylebone.

Clarette is situated in one of London’s most vibrant and coveted locations - on the corner of Blandford Street and Manchester Street, housed in a wonderfully distinctive multi-storey building, jewelled with stunning stained glass windows.

With a vibrant and sophisticated interior, Clarette is a delightful place to explore wine and to enjoy French-inspired food.

The wine list includes countless exceptional wines by the bottle, and over 50 wines served by the glass including an immense Coravin range. Clarette boasts an extensive list of Château Margaux wines sourced directly from the Château and in pristine condition - which is no surprise as the inspirations behind the independent restaurant come from co-owner Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos of the family behind Château Margaux, the prestigious First Growth wine estate in Bordeaux.

Alongside a magnificent wine cellar and fabulous food, personal service and attention to detail are what make wining and dining at Clarette so special.
