“Perennially popular and always great fun” – there’s “nowhere better for excellent salt beef and chicken soup”, say fans, than this classic Jewish deli in Baker Street – Britain’s longest-running kosher restaurant, having opened (on a different site) in 1973. Restaurateur Lee Landau saved it from closure four years ago with plans for a revival of the basement fine-dining space, scheduled to open in late 2023.

“One of very few places in town certified kosher” – this 50-year-old classic Jewish deli (with basement restaurant) in Baker Street is often tipped for its “excellent salt beef” and also lays claim to the title of longest-running kosher restaurant in Britain (although it has only operated on this site for about half of that time). Three years ago it was rescued from closure by restaurateur Lee Landau.

“Terrific salt beef on rye in a great location” – this classic Jewish deli in Marylebone can claim to be the only kosher restaurant in the West End, and celebrates its half-century next year. Two years ago it was rescued from closure by Golders Green restaurateur Lee Landau, who had eaten here as a boy. He has renovated the basement to add fine dining to the deli counter and tables on the ground floor.

Summary

In August 2019, this well-known, 47-year-old, kosher deli in Marylebone was rescued and given a big refurb, courtesy of restaurateur Lee Landau. It’s still in the same format – deli on the ground floor, a restaurant in the basement. Let’s hope the next survey will also report better cooking!

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
