“Plenty of yummy breakfast options” win praise for this “extremely well done” brunch specialist which launched 19 years ago in Soho and now has 13 self-described ‘cafés’, 10 of them around the capital, and another four bars and pubs. The fry-ups, pancakes and other comfort-food delights can be accompanied by cocktails if you fancy pushing the boat out early with a Breakfast Mai Tai. Any complaints? – “just the incredibly annoying queues”.

These “quirky, popular and lively venues” (nine in London; four more out of town) serve “British and American comfort foods” in “good portions” – think pancakes, full English fry-ups, French toast, plus cocktails later in the day. It’s all “deeply unhealthy – but soooo delicious with good-quality ingredients”. Top Tip – “benefits for over-65s” (in the shape of half-price dishes).

“I admit I was a bit skeptical when I tried Breakfast Club for the first time. It seemed small, a little understated and how differentiated can breakfast be? Luckily they proved me wrong!”. So “don’t be put off by external appearances” at these busy and “cool” cafés, where you get a “proper breakfast” from a “good choice of UK or global options”. “I don’t know that I’d stand outside for an hour plus as some folks do, but the early bird gets the Chorizo Hash here!”.

An “outstanding array of breakfasts”“from egg and chips to huevos rancheros”“in a buzzing atmosphere” that lasts well into the evening has driven the enormous popularity of this café chain. “Book ahead though, or be ready for a long queue at the door”. The convivial party feel is fuelled by cocktails as the day wears on.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
