"Maybe over-priced and cooking is uncomplicated but careful ingredient selection makes this 'cafe' better than most."

"Probably the worst prawn Dansak I've ever eaten -absolutely flavourless. "Special" rice not much better. Starter King Prawn Butterfly as dry as a bone."

chickentownA new twist on London's ubiquitous chicken shop (there are now over 8,000 of these grungy fast food joints) will open in the badlands of Tottenham later this year. Chicken Town by Create is a new food and community project that claims it will 'tackle child obesity at its source'.

Opening in September, it will offer an alternative to north London's abundant fried chicken spots, serving 'better quality meals' at the same price as neighbourhood chicken shops. Chicken Town will also operate as a restaurant in the evening, with partners like The Clove Club, Quo Vadis and Polpo providing guest menus and working on a mentor programme.

All profits raised in the evenings will fund daytime meals for local young people and the project will deliver a range of outreach community initiatives. Create have launched a Kickstarter campaign to get the final funding needed to get the project off the ground. The project went live yesterday (26 March) and aims to raise £50,000.

Create have already raised £265,500 of core capital funding towards the project, including a £15,500 grant from good old Bo Jo's Mayor of London High Street Fund. The funds raised on Kickstarter will be used for specialist restaurant equipment, like state of the art fryers with filtration.

More restaurant partners to be announced shortly. Chicken Town is supported by Haringey Council and the Mayor of London’s High Street Fund.
