“Our teen kids love this place and we do too!” – so say fans of Frank Leung’s Tooting venue, which provides steamed Taiwanese buns, washed down with decent cocktails, in an atmospheric neighbourhood setting. See also ‘Mr Bao’ in Peckham.

Taiwanese steamed buns with tasty fillings are the stars at the Tooting branch of Frank Leung’s highly rated Bao family trio (‘Mr’ in Peckham, ‘Master’ in Westfield Shepherd’s Bush), named in honour of his father, Joe, who retired after a lifetime in restaurants five years ago.

Tooting’s contribution to the bao boom, this “friendly, fast-paced small restaurant offers excellent Taiwanese food”, with exotic cocktails to accompany the steamed buns. It is part of Frank Leung’s growing chain, alongside Mr Bao in Peckham and Master Bow in Westfield Shepherd’s Bush.

Sibling to Peckham’s Mr Bao, this casual, small Tooting yearling similarly specialises in steamed buns and other tasty Taiwanese treats, and wins nothing but very good ratings for its cooking.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
