Luke Johnson is laughing all the way to the bank with his partial June 2015 sale of this once-tiny pâtisserie chain; some reporters think it can be “dire” nowadays (the new branches in particular), but others do praise the “wonderful” cakes and “yummy brunches”, especially at the “tatty but charming Old Compton Street original”.
Those who remember the “former glories” of this once-tiny chain see its current venture capital-backed growth as a “travesty”; others still find it an OK pit stop, though, for a coffee and croissant, or a teatime bun.
“Terrible, now it’s a chain” – too often the verdict on the venture capital-backed roll-out of these “once-delightful” and “quirky” pâtisseries, which have been “formularised” and “had all charm squeezed from them”; growth, however, continues unabated.
