"This is a smashing old boozer which still has the feel of something of a good old fashioned pub. But set in this is a really professional restaurant which serves great carnivore dishes. The area around the pub was unfamiliar to us but, wow, what a buzz on a Friday night. It had a great mix of diners, young and old and lots of ethnic backgrounds. A lovely reflection of contemporary London."

"A disastrous dinner. Although it looked like we might not be seated even with a reservation, the wait was only a few minutes. The captain, or order taker, was totally incompetent. We received the first part of the order so quickly that we thought we would be out in 30 minutes. An hour later, we were still waiting for the rest of the order, although this insipid captain wanted to give us dessert. The food was as uninspiring as can be: bland, not hot, boring, etc. Were this a first time, we definitely would not return."

"I had high hopes of finding Italian pizza slices right here in London. I was sorely disappointed: stale sponge-like bases, taste-free tomato sauce, cheapest ingredients. All served in a noisy (90db+) dirty café. Best avoided."

"The food is very good, and we always look forward to dining here; however, the atmosphere reflects the crowded tables that are often too small for the service plates. The menu has an extensive selection of appetizers, along with the main courses and fruit. A wonderful Lebanese establishment that we continue to look forward to visiting."

shutterstock_144582065As the start of the first university term rolls around parents across the country will be packing their genius offspring off to the hallowed halls of some of the country's best academic institutions. So parents if you're planning to take your future graduates out for a 'last supper' before you drop them at the varsity, or students, if you're looking for cheap dining suggestions, look no further. Here's a selection of restaurants in the UK's top university towns outside of London (according to the university league table for 2016)...

1. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

cottoCotto, Cambridge

£75

“An oasis”; the setting may be on the “quirky” side (entered via a café), but the cuisine at this “unobtrusively experimental” dining room can be “fantastic” – it may help that “the menu is designed to offer something for both safe and more adventurous diners”.

Your students-to-be will need to have acquired at least four A* at A-level (and possibly a scholarship to boot!) but if they've been really good then this is the place to take them.

midsummer houseMidsummer House, Cambridge

£138

Daniel Clifford’s “sheer innovation” has won a gigantic reputation for this “slightly formal” Cam-side destination, and the results are “terrific”; “ask your bank manager before you open the wine list” though, as the prices are “crazy”.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

steak and honourSteak & Honour, Cambridge

£11

“Really great burgers from a van!”; in this still under-served city, it’s worth seeking out these “faultless” patties, which twin “obviously well sourced beef” with toppings that are “more interesting than usual”.

coast fish and chip cambridgeCoast Fish & Chip, Cambridge

£24

One of the best features of this “enjoyable” new chippy, near Trinity? – actually, it’s “the best full English breakfast in town”!

2. OXFORD UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

cherwell boathouseCherwell Boathouse, Oxford

£45

This “lovely” venue has long been of note for its “fantastic” location – “overlooking the river and an entertaining punt-embarkation point” – and its “excellent and inexpensive wine list”; nowadays, though, most reporters find the food “surprisingly good” too.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

vaults and gardenThe Vaults & Garden Café

£17

“In a lovely ex-chapel within a church or, if you wish, the graveyard on a nice day!” – this self-service veggie is a real crowd-pleaser, offering “very tasty and hearty” mains and “sensational salads”.

oli's thaiOli's Thai, Oxford

£30

“Massive taste sensations” have made a big name for this small but “lovely” café, where “the short menu is beautifully cooked”, and served by “friendly” staff; “booking is essential”.

3. ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

Vine Leaf, St Andrews

£47

“The best restaurant in St Andrews”, in business for a quarter of a century, remains something of a “haven of good food” – a “quirky” but “professional” sort of place, whose hidden-away location can seem quite romantic; warning for first-time visitors, though – allow a bit of extra time so you can find it!

To really push the boat out try...

seafood st andrewsSeafood Restaurant, St Andrews

£64

“A stunning ‘glass box’ overlooking the beach, where a high-quality range of dishes is well served” – one reporter’s neat encapsulation of most commentary on this seaside stand-out, which enjoys “fantastic” views.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

St Andrews is not really a town known for its cheap eats, but the light lunches of sandwiches and baked potatoes at the Doll's House offer good bang for buck, and their Sunday roast is £10 pp.

dolls houseThe Doll's House, St Andrews

£42

“For over 20 years this unpretentious spot has consistently offered freshly-cooked food to a high standard”; even a reporter who says it’s “not the best restaurant in town” notes that “it is the best value”.

4. SURREY UNIVERSITY (Guildford)

For a special occasion try...

britten'sBritten's, Guildford

£49

Opened by former MasterChef competitor Dan Britten in November 2013, this “great new independent”, in the city-centre, is already attracting plaudits for its “interesting” modern British cuisine and “great ambience”.

Also worth checking out...

The Thai Terrace, Guildford

£41

Implausibly located on top of a multi-storey car park, this lively oriental restaurant (with large terrace for drinks) offers “great views of Guildford”; perhaps even more surprisingly, both food and service are consistently very highly rated!

Students looking for cheap eats try...

Our pricing system is based on a starter, main course, dessert, half a bottle of wine, coffee and service, so Rumwong is better value for students than is perhaps apparent at first. You can get a hearty noodle bowl or curry for around £10.

Rumwong, Guildford

£38

A Thai veteran (est 1978) which is “still the best in Guildford”, say fans, thanks to its “consistently delicious” food and “traditional surroundings”; “book ahead as it’s always crowded”.

5. BATH UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

menu gordon jonesMenu Gordon Jones, Bath

£64

“No fancy table appointment or stuffiness, just amazing food served by knowledgeable staff in a relaxed environment” – that’s the deal at this “intimate” venture whose “superb tasting menu and associated wine-matching” would “be of note even in the capital”… perhaps especially for its “very good pricing”.

To truly push the boat out try...

Bath Priory Hotel, Bath

£110

“Sam Moody trained with Michael Caines at Gidleigh Park, and it shows” – the dishes presented in the “beautiful” dining room of this country house hotel are often “superb”; even fans, though, can find the experience a touch “overpriced”.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

mint roomThe Mint Room, Bath

£29

“An Indian menu with more variety than usual, and served with fine-dining flair” – dishes which are “spiced to perfection” make this lavish purpose-built restaurant, just outside the city-centre, undoubtedly “the best in town”; indeed, one reporter had their “best-ever Indian meal” there!

6. DURHAM UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

finbarr'sFinbarr's, Durham

£47

“The best restaurant in Durham” – thanks to its “reliably good” food (“with contemporary touches”) and “friendly and helpful staff”, this smart but “tucked away” venture “has now thoroughly established itself”.

Or go the more tried-and-tested route...

Bistro 21, Durham

£50

“A lovely house”, complete with courtyard, shelters this well-established “old favourite”, just outside the city centre (part of Terry Laybourne’s Newcastle-based empire); the seasonal cooking is “consistently good”, and “you are always made to feel welcome”.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

zen durhamZen, Durham

Dishes from £6.50

Not a restaurant that has ever come across our books before but Durham foodies assure us it has long been a firm student favourite; serving 'daredevil' Thai curries and pan-Asian street food at very decent prices. Durham Uni-goers get 10% discount too.

7. WARWICK UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

tailorsTailors, Warwick

£55

“Consistently the best restaurant around here”; fans are full of praise for the “cracking cooking” and “inventive menu”, at this “intimate and comfortable” venture, which occupies a former tailoring shop in the town centre; “the secret is out”, though, so “book early”.

Also worth checking out...

The Art Kitchen, Warwick

£44

“Consistently good” food, and “beautifully presented” too, has made quite a name for this town-centre Thai; the set lunch is particularly worth seeking out for its “very good value”.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

Jin's Cafe, Warwick

Full English and tea from: £2.99!

According to Warwick students this is THE place to go if you're tired of the on-campus offering; just a stone's throw from the university buildings this cafe is cheap as chips for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

8. EXETER UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

abode exeterMichael Caines Cafe Bar & Grill, ABode Hotel Exeter

£73

By all accounts, MC’s central dining room with cathedral views has upped its game of late, to offer “food of Gidleigh Park-standard for a quarter of the price” – “I enjoyed it so much I returned the next day!”; lunch and early-bird menus offer top value.

Also worth checking out...

rendezvous exeterRendezvous, Exeter

£39

Worth seeking out in Southernhay, a “lovely” wine bar, tipped not just for its “really first-class selection of wines”, but also its “varied, good-quality and reasonably-priced” cooking.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

hvlfBUaPHubbox, Exeter

Burgers from £5 and craft beers from £3

“Dirty burgers the way we like ’em, served by zealots!” – so say Harden's reporters who are fans of the “modified shipping container” Truro outpost of this dude food chain – it also has a site in Exeter's Sidwell Street.

9. LANCASTER UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

quite simply frenchQuite Simply French, Lancaster

£55

“Tipped for “unexpectedly imaginative” food and “reasonably priced” too, this long-established bistro “can be busy even on the foulest of nights”; “charming” and “attentive” service too.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

The Whale Tail Cafe, Lancaster

All-day dishes on average: £6.95

For a decent breakfast or wholesome lunch this fairly central vegetarian and vegan cafe is a safe bet according to students.

10. LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY

For a special occasion try...

hammer and pincersThe Hammer & Pincers, Loughborough

£48

“Great food, good-value set menu, best Sunday lunch in the area…” – such are the plusses fans see in the family-run beamed restaurant, in the village of Wymeswold, which almost invariably inspires positive reports.

Students looking for cheap eats try...

hog stopThe Hog Stop, Loughborough

From around £4.50

The chaps behind the town's Mexican cantina, the Cactus Cafe, and Australian restaurant Moomba (also worth checking out) have introduced a new street food venture. Locals seem to love their slow-cooked (overnight) pork and choice buns.
