The critic has a “thoroughly moribund meal” at this grand City dining room. “For a start, the name. 1901@Andaz. Sorry, but is there anyone left on Earth who still thinks that an ‘@’ sign in the middle of a restaurant’s name makes it look funky? It’s just soooooo 1998.” This, it turns out, “is a place for City thickoes who have made their money fast and thoughtlessly to come and disburden themselves of it in the same way”.

The critic visits 1901 – “formerly Aurora in Conran's Great Eastern Hotel, now Hyatt boutique brand Andaz”. As revamped, this is “a truly beautiful room”. “Apparently chef Dominic Teague (ex, erm, Aurora) has been tramping the length of the country in search of food-producing heroes”. His food is “good enough”, but “a little small and overwrought”. Whatever the place’s other attractions, it’s rather difficult to see how that’s a four-star performance.

The critic nicely-self summarises his review of this new grand hotel dining room, by Liverpool Street. “There's much to recommend 1901, particularly Teague’s cooking, his pretty plates, the friendly and professional service and a large selection of wines by the glass. But if I were trying to work out a formula for a successful restaurant for a time of recession, it wouldn’t involve big prices and small portions”.
