“The best steaks we have ever eaten!” – the Davidson family’s roadside inn near Linlithgow has built its renown over four decades in operation, for the quality of its meat; and there’s also a selection of prime-quality burgers. Reflecting their heritage, South African wines are the backbone of what’s a high-quality list to bolster the generally red-blooded vibe.

“Gargantuan portions of probably the best beef in the world” is not an unusual claim for this famous destination (where the writer and restaurant critic John Lanchester also found in days gone by “the best steak I have ever eaten”). The Davidson family’s “superb dining room and very friendly, competent service” have won plenty of friends and admirers over four decades for their red-blooded meals which traditionally begin with a glass of their house Champagne Père et Fils.

“Steaks to die for” are the USP of the Davidson family’s operation, dedicated to the glorification of prime Scottish beef from both the Highlands and the Borders. It’s not a place to go when counting the pennies, but has maintained a long-term reputation for quality over a number of decades.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
