2010 Review: In a Georgian townhouse, the Johns family’s restaurant is tipped is an “absolute gem” – only a small establishment (16 seats), it doesn’t inspire a huge amount of commentary… but all ‘raves’.

The critic visits a “quintessential special-occasion restaurant”, in “the converted front room of a sizeable Georgian town house, with genteel but plump soft furnishings, beige and taupe walls, heavy brocade curtains in a very trad maroon and a shiny, dainty chandelier”. The food generally satisfies, but is “a wee bit pricey” for what it is.

For once, the critic’s good deeds – in seeking to unearth good provincial restaurants – are rewarded. “If Britain really is to boast about its growing restaurant reputation”, he concludes, “it doesn't need more gastro palaces and designer food temples. It needs more places like this.”
