This “glorious spot” by the sea, close to the SW coastal path and with a front-conservatory to take advantage of sea views, was taken over by high-profile chef Michael Caines of Lympstone Manor in 2020. Quell hopes of any culinary fireworks, though – reports here didn’t hit the heights this year, with the experience too often “let down by chaotic service and pedestrian food”.

In early 2020, renowned local celebrity chef Michael Caines took over this beachfront venue, handy for the SW coastal path, which boasts “a conservatory at the front with views over the sea”. (It was previously run by Arty Williams & Annette Rickard for 17 years). Some reports do say it’s “lovely in all respects”, but a number of reporters “wanted to love it”, but found the experience blunted by “duff notes” on both the food and service front… here's “hoping it finds its feet”.

A “lovely position” with views over Maenporth Beach – including from the all-weather ‘Glassroom’ – combines with “very good food” from Cornish-born chef-patron Arty Williams at the attractive restaurant he has run for nearly 20 years.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"I had the tempura prawns which were cold and the batter was thick and unseasoned. The curried monkfish tasted fine but was cold. This meal was not worth the money charged"
