This half-timbered fifteenth-century former coaching inn is a “reliable venue for good food”, with a menu that ticks boxes all the way from basic cheeseburger or beer-battered hake ’n’ chips to more original offerings such as goat cheese doughnut with beetroot sugar and a flexible selection of dishes available in two sizes – as either starters or mains. Top Tip – “the great lobster Caesar salad”.

“Beautiful and atmospheric, with lovely décor” – Chis Haley’s fifteenth century wood-framed inn pleases all who comment on it, with its “beautifully presented” local grub. “Was it worth the 125 mile round trip? Oh yes!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Almost! Visited 6 years after my last visit...

"Almost! Visited 6 years after my last visit. Strangely, as last time the outstanding course was the dessert. A stunning parfait! Nice greeting and sat near the fireplace. Started with mussels, 12 shells 11 mussels!? Nice enough sauce and garnish. Was given 2 bowls for shells and 2 finger bowls, didn't realise i was that messy! Main was a traditional beef roast. Meat as I requested veg ok but Yorkshire a bit too crunchy for my taste. Frankly I would have driven the 125 miles just for the sensational fig and armanac parfait. Nice staff, sweet youngster table clearer. Toilets clean and well presented."
