Black Door Restaurant
The Black Door's two Davids alongside Albert Roux

David Kennedy built up an extensive knowledge of the Newcastle dining scene after a decade’s experience at leading local restaurant 21 Queen Street (later Café 21). When it came to opening Black Door, both he and business partner David Ladd recognised the need for upmarket and adventurous, yet accessible dining in Newcastle.

Their dedication to providing high-quality food and drink in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere has won them extensive praise from diners, who are thrilled to find this gem of a restaurant in the North East. It is this outstanding and consistent level of service and finesse that has earned them this year’s Excellence award in the 2006 Restaurant Rémy awards.

Described by David Kennedy as "a fresh twist on classic French techniques", Black Door’s elegant menu is all about getting the best, freshest local produce and combining it with quality ingredients from abroad. Menu items range from Northumberland smoked cheese soufflé with pickled girolles and pears, to roasted foie gras with caramelised mango, honey and cracked pepper.

David Ladd is responsible for creating the truly illuminating drinks selection – which includes a range of classic cocktails with a contemporary touch.

Fresh and exciting talent found at the now award-winning Black Door is contributing to the North East’s emergence as a gastronomic destination for foodies all over the UK.
